Please extend a warm welcome to following new members to the branch:

Jess Newey, age 15, from Wivelsfied Green.

Details of our Summer Events are now available here.  Parents and carers: don’t forget these events are our main branch money earners and we need lots of helpers to make them successful!  Please respond to appeals for help.

I hope all the new members will quickly settle in and start to enjoin the fun, companionship and comradery offered.

B test success for Sophie Beldham

I am sure everyone will wish to join me in congratulating Sophie Beldham on passing her B test on Wednesday.

Anyone who knows anything about the Pony Club tests will appreciate just what an achievement this represents and it will considerably aid Sophie when she moves on to college in the autumn.

Well done!

Branch Show

The Branch Show went ahead last Sunday despite some rather damp and inclement weather.  Thankfully nobody seemed put off by the intermittent rain and the event was well attended with many happy riders.  Mary Emeny kept a record of who won in each class;  a full listing is at the end of this post.

We are very grateful to the following organisations who kindly sponsored the event:

  • Cassidy Sporthorses
  • Dragons Green Livery
  • Town Place Equestrian Trec

I’m happy to report that the event made a healthy profit which will be ploughed back into branch funds.

Craig Payne did his usual excellent job of photographing anything that moved or jumped, click here to visit his website and view proofs of the pictures which he will be delighted to sell you!

Downsview Farm chose a dreadful day to début their home made ice cream while Paul Taylor was kept busy supplying welcome hot food and drinks all day.  John Bedford provided public address which made sure everyone was kept up to date with proceedings as well as helping set up and course building for the working hunters ring.

Special thanks go to the following members who worked tirelessly to help ‘the few’ set up on Saturday:  Katie Beard, Rebecca England, Evie Pope and Ellie Tijou plus, of course, ‘the few’ themselves!

Of course the show would not have been possible without Mary Emeny (ably assisted by her family) who did all the behind the scenes arranging, took the entries, transported the jumps, roped the arenas, set up the courses and manned the secretaries caravan.  Once again Debbie Medlicott supplied the judges and helpers with sandwiches and light refreshments and Trina Riley organised the rosettes.

Also thanks go to those who helped clear up very efficiently on Sunday afternoon and towed the jumps back to their lair.

Finally, a special thank you you Nick and Sonia Harvey for allowing us to hold the show at Wivelsden and who doubtless had other things to think about as it was the day of Nick’s 40th birthday and attendant celebrations.  Happy Birthday Nick!

As you can see putting on a show is a team effort and a lot of people are involved but we could always do with some new faces so don’t be shy!

The “Ripley”

If you have ever wondered what the Branch Officers do in their spare time (!) then this photograph may give you a clue.  The DC of the East Sussex Branch was so impressed with the efficiency with which Dr. Lionel Ripley kept track of the cross country times at one of our events last summer she asked him if he would be kind enough to ‘knock up’ a timer’s black board with stop watches for them to use.

So, voila, the “Ripley” XC Timekeeping Board:

The "Ripley"

Cancellation of the PABX Systems Hunter Trial

To anyone left wondering ‘why?’ after the weather on Sunday was near perfect the background is deceptively simple: we had to set a deadline for making a final decision of 9am Friday morning.  At that time the Met Office were still forecasting consistent rain, heavy at times, from 10pm Saturday night to 10am Sunday morning.  Had this weather actually materialised we would have faced a difficult situation with the possibility of not being able to access the whole course with a  4×4 ambulance in the event of an accident plus the increased risk of falls on slippery going.   Even without the rain some parts of the course were still very soft.

We will consider putting on an additional Hunter Trial later in the season (perhaps in the Autumn) if the weather is kind to us.

For ‘wannabe’ forecaster’s the pressure chart revealed a complex pattern of low pressure areas and associated fronts making the predictions unstable 48 hours ahead – seaweed anyone???

Don’t forget we have some schooling days coming up after the Branch Show on 6th and 7th June.  Details here.

Stuart Fellingham appointed to the branch committee

I am pleased to announce that the Branch Committee recently decided to appoint Stuart Fellingham as an additional member.

Stuart will take responsibility for coordinating fund raising and sponsorship.  This is becoming an increasingly important aspect of managing the branch and I’m sure everyone will support him in his new role.

Stuart is, of course, an ex-member.  For many years he has also given up a week of his annual leave to attend summer camp at Plumpton where he has helped to magic away the ‘muck’ from the stables to great effect.

For the purposes of clarity, branch committee members are appointed by the committee for a three year period of office.  Anyone wishing to serve for a further period must then be re-elected by the other members on a rotating basis.  It is also the resposibility of the committee to appoint the DC, Treasurer and other officers as required.

Eventing News

Hazel Perry reports:

On Sunday 15th April Amy Dunn and I did a one day event at Tweseldown.  Both our horses did pleasing dressage tests.  Darcy jumped double clear and finished 10th.  Amy had an unfortunate 2 poles down show jumping but Grouse flew cross country.

Not bad for their first event of the season!

Show jumping at Golden Cross

My thanks go to Candy Robbins for submitting the following report:

The  Branch was represented by 4 teams at the East Sussex Interbranch show jumping competition held at Golden Cross on 14th April – thankfully the weather was 100% better than the last competition held at this venue!

Our Mini team of Hazel Perry riding Harvey, Steph Barnes-Capps riding Whiskey, Livvy Logan riding Dylan and Georgia Corrin riding Daisy came 5th with Georgia also taking 5th place in the individual

The mixed pairs saw some very fast times with 11 combinations taking part – one rider from the mini teams paired with a rider from the novice teams.

Hazel and Harvey were in flying form and partnered by Wil Gribble on his new ride, Boogie, came an excellent 3rd, followed in 5th place by Livvy Logan riding Dylan and Tara Keoshgerian riding Jester.

The Novice class created many nail biting rounds with plenty of stops and poles on the floor!

However, our “Red Team” of Tara Keoshgerian riding Jester, Sophie Duffield riding Amber, Sophie Beldham riding Connie and Ben Berrill riding Ready Eddie Go came a  brilliant 2nd,  and our “Blue team” of Beth Giddings riding Perfect Pete, Emma Robbins riding Charlie Chalk, Chloe Fry riding Gunner and Jess Copsey riding Evie came 3rd.

Individual placing’s also went to Beth – 3rd, Tara – 5th, Sophie Beldam – 6th, Ben – 7th and Jess – 8th

The Intermediate team came in 2nd with fine performances from Lara Curtis riding Duke, Will Gribble riding Boogie and Sophie Beldham riding Strider. Lara and Duke went on to take 1st place in the individual, so a very well done to them.

Another great day for the branch with lots of rosettes – 4 team placing’s, 2 pair placing’s  and 7 individual placing’s.

Well done also to Georgia McCormick riding Forest Fire in the mini individual class, Grace Black and Holly Feltham, Georgia Corrin and Beth Giddings in the mixed pairs and also Beth Giddings riding Del and Will Gribble in the Novice individual.

Look out for more competitions coming up and remember to attend lots of practices to be considered for a place in a team – we hope to have some after school sessions organised in the very near future.

Many thanks to all the parents and helpers for their support, and above all, thankyou to all the members who took part, rode well, made a big effort with their turnout and were a credit to their branch.

Candy

P.S. Mrs Giddings, next time please can you wear gloves, I have a Chinese burn on my wrist and nail marks!!!
