Peter Fogg retires from the Branch Committee

After serving the Branch as a Committee Member for 28 years Peter Fogg has decided it’s time to hang up his bridle for the last time.  In typical Pony Club fashion Peter tell’s me it was actually his wife who was invited to join the Branch Committee but she deemed herself to be too busy!  As some of you will know Peter has two daughters both of whom were members and Hannah Roddis (nee Fogg) now works for the Jockey Club and was instrumental in establishing the Laker-Russell Bursary.

Peter assures me he will continue to assist Lionel Ripley in the famous double act that anyone who has competed cross-country at one of our events will be familiar with.  He has also been an invaluable clip board artist and has accompanied me on many a health and safety venue assessment.

Our thanks go to Peter for his wisdom, sound counsel and all that he has contributed to the Branch.  We wish him peacful evenings in place of minutes and turgid agendas!

We will need a ‘cabinet reshuffle’ and I will announce some changes to branch officer’s roles and responsibilities in due course.

Hazel Perry, Pony Club Ambassador

By now you will be familiar with receiving regular emails from branch member Hazel Perry who has tirelessly organised rallies and events for the younger members of the branch, in addition to oganising teams and supporting members at competitions, for the past two years.  Hazel was also the inspiration behind the hugely successful Mini Horse Trials run for the first time last September and she took on the organisation for this year’s Branch Show.  This week Hazel is at Senior Camp as a member of yard staff.

It is therefore extremely appropriate that the Pony Club should have introduced the Ambassador Scheme as a means of providing some national recognition for such effort and commitment and I am delighted to announce that Hazel has been successfully nominated as a Pony Club Ambassador.  She will be presented with her award and jacket at the Pony Club Championships at Cholmondeley Castle during August.

I am very proud of the growing band of young people, both members and ex members, who have shown themselves willing and able to help and organise.  This gives great hope for the future of the branch and does much to compensate for the all too familiar picture of young people being a drain on society!

The text below is from the Pony Club website:

Ambassador Scheme

We were delighted to announce at the Conference that we are introducing a Pony Club Ambassador Scheme to acknowledge and reward Members who stand out as exceptional and invaluable assets to The Pony Club.  You are invited to nominate any of your Members to become a Pony Club Ambassador if they fulfil the following criteria:

• 18 years old or over
• Actively supportive in the Branch / Centre / Area
• A Pony Club member for a minimum of five consecutive years
• Committed to The Pony Club aims and ethos.

Please send your nominations to The Pony Club office by 31st May 2013.  From the nominations received, a short list will be selected and those Members will be asked to complete a personal statement by 1st July.  Pro forma questions will be supplied for the personal statement to be based on so all applications can be easily reviewed and compared.  A panel of judges will then review the personal statements and from these and select the Pony Club Ambassadors.  Toggi have generously supplied bespoke jackets for the Ambassadors, which will be awarded at The Pony Club Championships at Cholmondeley Castle this year.

Hats and Body Protectors – Fitting

It’s recently been brought to my attention that some members and their parents/carers may be unclear about how to ensure hats and body protectors are fitted correctly and the purpose of the Pony Club ‘hat tag’ and what it means.

Unfortunately Pony Club approved instructors are not trained in the correct fitting of hats and body protectors and so are unable to provide definitive guidance or judgement on the subject.  It is best that parents/carers refer to a reputable tack dealer on such matters.   At a practical level clearly there is a potential problem when equipment is purchased second hand and children do have a habit of growing.  Much can be answered by the application of  ‘common sense’ – a hat so tight it causes discomfort is likely to be too small and one that flops around too large!  Like ponies, children have different conformations so a body protector that is a comfortable fit for one child may be hopeless on another.  Also please remember that if a hat has had any kind of significant impact it may no longer provide maximum protection and should be replaced.

The Pony Club Health and Safety rules do insist that hats must conform to a recognised quality standard.  The purpose of the hat tag is to provide a quick visual confirmation that the hat conforms to the safety standard and so saves time asking the rider to dismount and take their hat off to reveal the mark inside.  The tag does not mean it fits correctly!

A fall from a pony or horse can be a painful experience.  Hats and body protectors are worn to try and prevent serious (ie. life changing) injury or worse.   Wearing a hat and back protector does not mean a rider will necessarily always avoid bruising or minor injury to limbs.

More test passes in the holidays.

Melanie Cammies reports:

Just to let you know a delighted Gabriella Knight achieved her E Test at Drapers Farm Rally on Thursday, 30.05.13.  Examined by Vinnie Phelan and Certificate and Felt given to her.

Efficiency tests are an integral (if optional) part of Pony Club life and we encourage all members to work towards their tests.  They are graded in standard and rise up to A standard which is sufficiently stratospheric that only a few members achieve it each year nationally.

Well done Gabriella!

I’m delighted to share the exciting news that Hazel Perry passed her B riding exam on Thursday 30th May and now holds her full B test qualification.  Congratulations and well done!

Ardingly Show Jumping at Easter

I am indebted to Candy Robbins for sending me the following report:

Southdown Hunt East Pony Club – Team and Individual Show Jumping

South of England Showground – 30th & 31st March 2013

Following the disappointment of having to postpone this event in January due to heavy snow and ice, Southdown Hunt East branch of the Pony Club held their first event of the season at Ardingly showground over the Easter weekend.

The event was run over two days and 13 branches produced over 420 rounds of highly competitive jumping.

Younger members took part on Saturday in the mini mini and mini individual scurry and team classes as well as the popular Top Score.

The home team of SDHE “Green” won the mini team class with some super performances from Maddie Aloof riding Bailey, Matthew Perry riding Cisco, Jasmine Pearce riding Hilton and Jody Watson riding Scooby.

Rebecca Harvey riding Chammi took a well deserved 6th place in the mini mini individual scurry with Flo Evans Thomas riding Jazz and Hazel Perry riding Harvey coming 2nd & 3rd in the mini individual scurry.

The Top Score saw some very competitive riding and was won by Lucy Pearce riding Mo Boy for Mid Surrey.  SDHE members Vicky Henderson riding Amy came 3rd and Maddie Aloof riding Bailey came 5th.

Sunday saw the small novice, novice and intermediate individual and team classes ending with a very popular puissance.

In the small novice, the SDHE team came 4th represented by Katie Beard riding Paddington Bear, Jason Watson riding Scooby, Kezzie Fish riding Star and Rosanna Curtis riding Martin.

The home team was again victorious in the novice with the “Blue” team of Beth Giddings riding Perfect Pete, Emma Robbins riding Chalky, Jessica Copsey riding Evie and Tara Keosherigan riding Jester taking 1st place after a nail biting jump off.  The “Red” team came 3rd and consisted of Ben Berill riding Ready Eddie Go, Chloe Fry riding Del and Hazel Perry riding Darcy.

Tara and Jester also jumped a splendid fast clear to win the novice individual scurry.

In the intermediate the branch was placed 4th with the team of Lara Curtis riding Ludo, Sophie Duffield riding Amber and Millie Forman riding Aimee’s Art,

The climax of the day was the puissance run over 5 rounds, with 26 riders jumping over the wall at the starting height of 2’9.  This produced some excellent jumping with 1st place being shared by Helena Gurdin riding Ultimate Flying Dutchman for Cobham and Annabel Murphy riding Black Jack Van Nova for Crawley & Horsham South jumping the wall at 4’2.  Lara Curtis riding Ludo came joint 3rd for SDHE jumping 3’11.

Helena Gurdin also took 1st and 3rd places in the intermediate individual and was a member of the winning Cobham intermediate team, so a fantastic day for Helena.

The next event held by Southdown Hunt East will be the Spring Hunter Trials on 19th May to be held at Wivelsden Farm, followed by the Open Show at the same venue on 1st June.  Details of these and other events and cross country schooling can be found on their website: http:/branches.pcuk.org/southdowneast
